What a Heat Pump Does Through a Woodstock Winter
Output from any heat pump falls as the outside air cools, so the only figure worth printing is what it still delivers on the worst night. In this city that night is minus 19, and a cold climate unit chosen against it keeps heating well below freezing.
That figure is the floor rather than the average. Most winter nights are nowhere near it, and on those nights a heat pump moves heat for less than a gas furnace burns it. That is where the saving comes from, so we size the system for the worst night and choose the model for the ordinary ones.
There is one piece of paperwork to settle first. The city names furnaces and duct work as building permit work and names a heat pump neither way, so we ask the building department rather than guess. Any fee appears on your quote.
The Rebate, and What It Is Actually Worth to You
Rebate advertising leads with the largest number available, and that is almost never the number for a gas-heated house. Below is the figure that applies here, with the two rules that disqualify most homeowners.
What a gas-heated house gets
The Home Renovation Savings Program pays $500 for every ton of capacity on a cold climate heat pump, meaning one that takes its heat from the outside air, up to a ceiling of $2,000. You have to own the home and hold an active Enbridge residential account. Gas has been in the ground here since about 1875 and Enbridge bills roughly 17,400 customers, so most houses already meet that condition.
The two rules most homeowners miss
Pre-approval is mandatory, so a job that starts before the approval arrives collects nothing, however well it is installed. A house that already has a heat pump does not qualify, because the program will not pay to replace one. We check both on the first call. We also looked for a city or county top-up here and found none, so the provincial rebate is the only money available.
What Every Heat Pump Quote Covers
We write the same eight steps into every heat pump quote in this city, in this order.
- We measure every room, add up what the house actually needs, and confirm the unit still delivers that on the coldest night.
- We check your fuel and your gas account against the rebate rules, and give you the figure you can expect rather than the advertised one.
- We file the application and hold the job until the written approval arrives, because anything started before then collects nothing.
- We put the permit question to the city, because new duct work puts a job on their list.
- We look at your electrical service early, because a panel upgrade adds weeks to the job.
- We choose and level the pad, clear of the drip line and the snow off the roof.
- We run the refrigerant lines, seal them, and patch the wall properly behind them.
- We set up the control that switches the house between the two, and we agree the switching temperature with you before we leave.
Please tell us on the first call if the house already has a heat pump. The program pays nothing toward replacing one, and nothing for a home lived in six months or less.
Three Ways a Heat Pump Fits a Home Here
Dual fuel, with the gas furnace kept in place
The heat pump carries the mild weather and the furnace takes the deep cold. Most houses here choose this, because the gas supply is already at the wall.
All-electric, through the ducts
You have no gas bill at all, and electric backup sits behind the heat pump for the worst of the winter. A house heated by oil, propane, wood or electricity earns the much larger rebate.
Heads on the wall, room by room
We fit one small unit in each room that needs it, with no duct work anywhere. It is how a Victorian house in the west end gets a heat pump at all, and how a basement suite gets its own heating.
All three take their heat from the outside air, and the duct work usually decides which one suits you. Our heat pump installation page shows which cold climate units we stock, and ductless mini split installation covers the homes with no duct work at all.
What Sets the Price of a Heat Pump
Your electrical panel, the position of the outdoor unit and the duct work affect this price as much as the equipment does, which is why we quote after a site visit. Our financing options page covers the ways to spread whatever is left after the rebate.
| The setup | What we install | What changes the price |
|---|---|---|
| Dual fuel, with the furnace kept | A cold climate outdoor unit, a matching coil, and a control that decides which half runs. | The output your rooms need, the unit you choose, and whether your panel has room. |
| All-electric, using the ducts you have | The heat pump carries the season by itself, with electric backup for the coldest nights. | The size of that backup, what your service can carry, and what the ducts will move. |
| Heads on the wall | One unit outside, plus a head mounted in each room you want heated and cooled, and a drilled hole for each run. | The number of heads, and the length of pipe each one needs. |
The rebate takes nothing off our price. It goes to you instead, and only if the approval arrives before the installers do, which is why we start that paperwork on the day you say yes.
Who Stands Behind the Installation
This job has a rebate to claim, a panel to assess, and a machine that has to deliver on the coldest nights of the year. A lot rests on one quote, so it is fair to ask who stands behind it.
Over 10 years of this work
Sina owns the company, and on most driveways he is the technician who arrives. He sizes the system and commissions it himself.

We read your panel before we quote
A heat pump needs its own circuit, and sometimes a larger service as well. We read the panel on the quote visit, so the electrical work never arrives as a surprise.
Our hot water tank broke down in the middle of cold weather, called Local Heatingncooling. Sina come over in the same day, inspected and explained to us different options. Our new hot water tank got installed by him the second day. Sina is very professional and good workmanship. We will definitely have him back to do other maintenance.

The Four Steps, Starting With the Rebate
We order nothing until the written approval arrives.
Tell us what currently heats the house
A phone call or the form is enough to start. We will ask for your current fuel, the name on the gas account, and how much of the heating season you would like it to carry.
We size it, and we check the panel
We measure room by room, work out what your electrical service can carry, choose the position for the outdoor unit, and establish which rebate figure applies.
Your price arrives, and we file the application
Your quote lists the equipment, the control, any electrical work, what the system still delivers in the cold, and the rebate on a line of its own. We then lodge the application and wait.
We install it and run it both ways
We level the pad, run the lines and connect the electrical supply. We then run the system through a heating cycle and a cooling cycle, agree the handover temperature with you, and register the warranty in your name.
