When your furnace quits, you do not need guesswork. You need a technician who can diagnose the real cause, explain it plainly, and get you back to steady heat.
We provide furnace repair in Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding towns. If the repair points to a replacement, we will say so and show you the next step through our furnace installation service.
Get Your Heat Back Without the Runaround
A proper repair is not “swap a part and hope.” It is root-cause diagnosis, safe operation checks, and verification through a full heating cycle.
Here’s what you get when we handle your furnace repair:
- Fast clarity. We narrow the fault early, instead of chasing symptoms.
- Safer operation. We focus on ignition, venting, and safety controls, not just comfort.
- Better reliability. Fix the underlying cause so the same issue does not return next week.
- Options you can trust. If repair makes sense, we repair. If it does not, we explain why.
One straight answer beats three “maybes.”
No Heat Right Now? Start With These Safe Checks
If your home is cold, these quick checks can save time and help us diagnose faster.
Safe checks you can do in 5 minutes:
- Make sure the thermostat is set to HEAT, and raise the setpoint 2–3°C.
- Replace the furnace filter if it is visibly clogged (then give the furnace a few minutes).
- Check the furnace power switch (it looks like a light switch near the unit).
- Check the breaker. If it keeps tripping, stop resetting it.
- Make sure supply vents and return air grilles are not blocked.
Stop and Call If You Notice Any of These
- You smell gas or a “rotten egg” odour
- Your carbon monoxide alarm sounds
- You smell burning electrical insulation
- You see soot, scorch marks, or water around electrical components
If you smell gas: leave the home and call 911 or your gas utility’s emergency line. Enbridge’s steps are here
If your CO alarm sounds: leave immediately, get to fresh air, and call emergency services. Health Canada’s guidance is here.
Common Furnace Problems We Repair
Most breakdowns show up as a symptom first. We repair the symptom, but we fix the cause.
No heat or inconsistent heat
- Furnace not turning on
- Furnace turns on, then shuts off (short cycling)
- Furnace runs, but the air is not warm
Airflow problems
- Weak airflow from vents
- Blower runs constantly
- Fan runs, but little air comes out
Noises and smells
- Banging, rattling, squealing, clicking
- Burning smell at startup
- Musty smell from vents
High-efficiency furnace issues
- Water around the furnace (condensate drain or pump problems)
- Venting or intake trouble (including cold-weather icing concerns)
Our Furnace Repair Process
We Triage Before We Arrive
We ask what the furnace is doing, how long it has been happening, and whether you see any error lights. If it’s safe, we may ask you to note the thermostat settings and filter condition.
This saves time on-site and improves first-visit accuracy.
We Diagnose the Root Cause On-Site
We look beyond the obvious. Depending on the symptoms, we may check:
- Electrical power, controls, and safeties
- Ignition sequence (inducer, ignitor, flame proving)
- Burner performance and stable operation
- Airflow restrictions (filter, blower, duct basics)
- Temperature rise behaviour through a full cycle
- Venting and condensate drainage on high-efficiency systems
You Get Clear Options
We explain what failed, why it failed, and what prevents repeat issues. Then we give you repair options that match the condition of your furnace, not a generic script.
We Repair, Test, and Verify
After the repair, we run the furnace through full heating cycles to confirm stable ignition and proper shutdown. We also confirm the original symptom is gone.
You should not have to “wait and see” after a repair.
Repair vs Replace
Here’s the catch: a cheap repair can become an expensive season if you keep stacking parts onto a furnace that is near end-of-life.
We recommend repair when it is the smart play. We bring up replacement when the numbers and the risk point that way.
Replacement becomes part of the conversation when:
- The furnace is older and has a pattern of breakdowns
- Major components start piling up (control board, inducer motor, blower motor)
- You have comfort problems a repair cannot solve (uneven heating, weak airflow)
- The system shows safety-related red flags that require deeper evaluation
- You want a long-term solution with predictable reliability
If you do end up replacing, our furnace installation team can walk you through equipment options, sizing, and what the install timeline looks like.
What Furnace Repair Costs Depend On
Every home and system is different. We do not throw out a made-up price range, because it will not match your furnace.
Furnace repair cost is driven by:
- The type of failure (simple control issue vs major component)
- Part availability (universal parts vs brand-specific parts)
- Furnace age and overall condition
- High-efficiency venting and condensate complications
- Access and work area conditions (tight mechanical rooms, finished basements)
If you want fewer surprise repairs, start with the basics: change filters on schedule and follow a seasonal maintenance plan. Your filter choice matters, too, and we can help you choose the right furnace filters for your home.
