Choosing the Right Size Furnace for Your Home
An oversized furnace costs more to buy, costs more to run, and heats your home less evenly. It reaches the thermostat setting in a few minutes, shuts off, and starts again soon after, which leaves the rooms furthest from the furnace colder than the rest of the house. That happens when the replacement is sized from the rating plate on the old unit instead of from the home.
We take the opposite approach. A technician measures each room and accounts for your windows and insulation, then calculates the output your home actually requires. In most cases that figure is lower than the furnace being removed. A size calculated for a home in the city often falls short here, because Fergus sits on higher and colder ground.
You will not be surprised by a permit fee either. Centre Wellington lists replacing a furnace among the jobs that need no building permit, so a straight replacement involves nothing to file. The one exception is a furnace that burns a fuel your home has not used before, and we confirm that with the building department before we issue your quote.
What Every Furnace Installation Includes
Every furnace installation we quote includes the same eight steps, in this order, whether your home is cut stone or six years old.
- We measure your rooms and size the furnace to your home, not to the unit being removed.
- We check your job against the township's permit list and put the answer in writing on your quote.
- We shut off the gas, remove the old furnace, carry it out over floor coverings, and cap the line.
- We plan the vent route and price the wall opening, core-drilled where the wall is stone.
- We open the ductwork above the furnace and rebuild anything restricting airflow to the blower.
- We run the condensate line to a proper drain, with a fall on it and a trap you can clean.
- We check the electrical supply against the new blower, and we file the notification with the Electrical Safety Authority, since the township does not inspect that work.
- We start the furnace with you present, run a full heating cycle, and register the warranty in your name.
Tell us on your first call if your home has never run on natural gas. That is the one version of this job that requires a township permit, and we include it in the quote from the start.
Single Stage, Two Stage and Modulating Furnaces
This choice decides how your home feels, and moving up a stage usually costs less than people expect. On a cold night it decides whether the back bedroom is as comfortable as the hallway. Our furnace installation page lists the Lennox range we install, and right-sizing a furnace explains what we are measuring for.
| How the furnace runs | What you notice on a cold night | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Single stage, one output | The furnace runs at full output or not at all, so a room warms past your setting and then drifts below it before the next cycle. | A newer home whose ductwork was designed for this type of furnace. |
| Two stage, a lower and a higher output | It runs on the lower output most of the winter and changes to the higher one when the temperature drops. | Most of the homes we quote, and our first recommendation for a bedroom that never warms up. |
| Modulating, which adjusts as it runs | It adjusts its output in small increments and holds a room within about a degree of your setting. | Older homes with awkward duct runs, and homeowners who notice the temperature swing. |
The efficiency rating on the carton matters less than people expect. The venting, the return air and the commissioning decide how the house feels.
Who Will Be Working in Your Home
Homeowners vote for the HomeStars Best of Award, and this company has received it five times. We have installed gas heating around this region for more than 10 years, and as an Authorized Lennox Dealer we fit equipment backed by factory training and genuine parts.
Sina owns the business and is still the technician on most driveways, so the person who measures your rooms is the person who starts the furnace at the end of the day. Sizing, the vent route and the return air are judgement calls, better made by one person who answers for all three.
We had a new furnace installed, very responsive, professional and clean for a very reasonable price, they put sheets on the floor all the way from the main door going down the basement, Sina is a nice guy taking his time answering and explaining all our inquiries, we were very satisfied with the service. Positive Responsiveness, Punctuality, Quality, Professionalism, Value
Harith AudaGoogle reviewWhat Determines the Price of Your Furnace Installation
Seven findings come back from the site visit, and together they set your price. The furnace itself is usually the smallest line, and we would rather show you the whole list than one figure at the door.
If you would prefer to pay monthly, our financing page explains the options.
| What the site visit finds | Why it affects your price |
|---|---|
| The size the measurements call for | It is more often below the old output than above it, and a smaller furnace costs less to run. |
| How many stages you choose | Three prices come out of the same basement: single stage, two stage, or modulating. |
| The chimney, if anything still vents into it | Masonry cannot carry the cool, wet exhaust a modern furnace produces, so the vent goes out through a wall. Through solid stone that means core-drilling. |
| The ductwork above the furnace | Cutting and rebuilding metal takes hours, and a restricted return holds back whatever sits beneath it. |
| The gas line and the electrical circuit | Spare capacity in both keeps this line small. A long run, or a panel with no space, does not. |
| Whether the fuel is changing | The one case that requires a township permit. The fee schedule starts at $120.00, and we confirm the line with the building department rather than estimate it. |
| A humidifier chosen for this water | Water this hard scales up the wrong type quickly, so the choice matters more here than the product literature suggests. Fitting one while the basement is open avoids a second visit. |
How the Installation Works, Step by Step
We order nothing until the price is in writing and you have chosen the installation date.
Tell us what January is like in your home
Call us or complete the form. Include the age of the furnace, which rooms stay cold, and whether anything still vents into a brick chimney.
We measure, and we deal with the township
Your technician measures every room, follows the venting and the ductwork, and puts the permit question to the building department so that you do not have to.
You read the price before any work begins
Your quote lists the make and model, the output on the coldest night, the vent route, any ductwork, and the permit line if you need one.
We install it, and we commission it
We remove the old furnace, install the new one with its own venting, and reconnect the gas and the electrical supply. We then run a full heating cycle with you and register the warranty in your name.
