What a Heat Pump Does Through Our Winter
A heat pump produces less heat as the temperature falls, so the figure that matters on your quote is not its output in October but its output on the coldest night. In Fergus that night is minus 20, a degree colder than the city an hour south, because this ground sits 400 metres above sea level. Sized against that temperature, a cold climate heat pump goes on heating well below freezing.
That night is the lowest point of the season, not the season itself. Almost all of the winter sits above it, and through that stretch a heat pump costs less to run than a gas furnace. Your saving comes from those milder months, so we size for the coldest night and choose the model on how it runs above it.
There is no permit fee waiting on installation day either. Centre Wellington lists adding a heat pump among the jobs that need no building permit, so there is nothing to file with the township. The unit does need its own circuit, and the township does not inspect electrical work, so we file that notification with the Electrical Safety Authority.
What the Rebate Is Worth Here
Most homeowners assume a house in town claims more than one on a rural road. The opposite is true, by a wide margin, and this is the largest single figure on your quote.
A gas-heated house in town: up to $2,000
The provincial Home Renovation Savings Program pays that amount back on a cold climate heat pump in a home heated by natural gas, and $3,000 on a ground loop. Enbridge supplies the gas here, so your account qualifies. We file the application and wait for written approval.
Propane, oil, electric or wood heated: up to $7,500
That is the same equipment for nearly four times the money, and a ground loop reaches $12,000. Parts of rural Centre Wellington are genuinely off the gas system, so a heat pump out there claims the larger rebate.
What a Heat Pump Quote Covers Here
Every heat pump quote covers the same eight lines, whether your home burns gas or propane.
- We measure the rooms, calculate what your home needs, then confirm the equipment still delivers it on the coldest night.
- We establish which rebate stream your address falls into, because gas and propane are worth very different amounts.
- We lodge the application before installation and wait for approval, because a job that starts first is not eligible.
- We tell you straight away if your home already has a heat pump, because the program pays nothing to replace one.
- We open your electrical panel early, because a service at its limit brings the utility into your timeline.
- We check the township's permit list, and on a heat pump the answer is no.
- We set a level pad, run and seal the refrigerant line, and finish any wall we core through.
- We fit the single control that chooses between the two, and we set its handover temperature with you.
Please tell us two things on your first call. If a gas furnace goes in alongside and your home has never burned gas, that is the one version of this job that needs a township permit. If your home has been lived in for six months or less, the program counts it a new build and pays nothing.
The Three Setups We Install
Dual fuel, keeping the furnace you own
The gas furnace stays for the coldest nights and the heat pump handles the rest. Most homes in town choose this, because the gas service is already at the wall.
Electric only, through the ducts
There is no gas at all, and electric coils sit behind the heat pump for the coldest weather. This setup earns the largest rebate, and where fuel arrives by truck it often costs less to run.
Wall heads, one room at a time
We fit a small indoor unit in each room that needs one, with no ductwork. In a stone house with the bedrooms under the roof, this is the only way a heat pump reaches them.
All three above are air source heat pumps, which take their heat from the outside air. Most homes here install that type. A ground loop earns a larger rebate, but it means drilling on a lot that already holds a well and a septic bed. Our heat pump installation page lists what we stock, and a ductless mini split suits a stone house with no ductwork.
What Determines the Price of Your Installation
Your electrical panel, the placement and your ductwork affect this price more than the equipment does, so we quote after the site visit, never over the phone. Our financing page sets out monthly options.
| How you set it up | What we install | What shifts the price |
|---|---|---|
| Dual fuel, keeping your gas furnace | We install a cold climate unit outside, a matching coil indoors, and one control choosing between the two. | The size your rooms require, the equipment tier, and whether your panel has a circuit free. |
| Electric only, through the ducts | The heat pump runs the winter with electric coils behind it. | The size of that backup, what your ducts already move, and the larger rebate. |
| Heads on the wall | We install one outdoor unit, a wall head in each room, and a cored opening for every run. | The number of heads, the distance from each to the unit, and whether those openings go through stone. |
The rebate does not come off our price. The program pays it back to you, and only once it has approved the job in writing, so we lodge the application the day you accept.
Who Will Be Writing Your Quote
This job involves a rebate application, a panel to assess, and equipment that has to keep working through extreme cold. A great deal rests on a single quote, so it matters who writes it.

Sina owns the company and is usually the technician on your driveway, so one person handles the sizing and the commissioning.

We read the panel before we write the price
A heat pump needs a dedicated circuit, and plenty of older panels have no space left. We check yours on the quote visit and price any upgrade with everything else.
Had my A/C installed by Sina at Local Heating and Cooling. Of all the contractors I met with he had one of the best prices and was by far the most friendly. He even offered to come fill my old leaking A/C while we waited for parts so I would be comfortable in the meantime. Highly recommended.

How Your Heat Pump Installation Works
We hold the written approval before we order your equipment.
Tell us what heats your home today
Call us or send the form with your current fuel, the account it is billed on, and the months you want the heat pump carrying the house.
We measure, and we open the panel
Your technician measures room by room, looks inside the panel, agrees the position with you, and works out which rebate your address can claim.
You read the price, then we apply for the rebate
Your quote names the equipment, its output on the coldest night, the control, the wiring and the rebate, line by line. We then lodge the application.
We install it and run it in both modes
We level the pad, run and seal the pipe, and connect the power. We then heat the house and cool it with you watching, set the handover temperature, and register the warranty.
Where We Install Heat Pumps Here
A stone house in the old core and a new build past Beatty Line are two different heat pump jobs, and usually it is the panel that separates them. Tell us the area and we will book a visit.
